Blockstream celebrated Bitcoin Pizza Day yesterday by donating 1,000 Jade Hardware Wallets to My First Bitcoin, a non-profit dedicated to grassroots Bitcoin education, marking a major step toward advancing self-custody worldwide.
The initiative, unveiled at a lively event in New York City co-hosted alongside PubKey, highlights Blockstream’s ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge needed for financial independence through the power of Bitcoin.
Advancing Global Bitcoin Education with Blockstream Jade
Bitcoin's journey from Laszlo Hanyecz's 10,000 BTC pizza purchase in 2010 to today's global financial network showcases how far we've come. As we celebrate this progress, Blockstream is turning its focus to the next frontier: equipping more people with the tools to participate directly and securely in the Bitcoin economy.
The 1,000 donated devices will support My First Bitcoin’s mission to deliver independent, impartial Bitcoin education and be distributed through its established network of local ‘nodes’ focused on grassroots outreach worldwide.
“Bitcoin has no borders,” said Peter Bain, VP of Consumer Products at Blockstream. “In many parts of the world, financial instability, inflation, and limited access to traditional banking continue to limit economic freedom. That’s why it’s critical to provide simple, secure tools that empower individuals to access, use, and hold Bitcoin safely. Blockstream is proud to support initiatives like My First Bitcoin, which are expanding financial literacy and enabling more people to participate in—and benefit from—the global growth of Bitcoin.”
A Year-Long Commitment to Bitcoin Self-Custody
This isn't just a one-time donation. Our initiative includes immediate wallet distribution, with continued donations planned throughout 2025. This approach reinforces Bitcoin's core principles of decentralization and accessibility, ensuring that more people can safely hold their own keys.
The hardware wallet donation expands Blockstream's commitment to grassroots Bitcoin education through programs like Blockstream Local, our initiative designed to support Bitcoin meetups around the world. Through Blockstream Local, we provide educational resources, promotional tools, and exclusive giveaways to help grow local communities and deepen Bitcoin knowledge.
Pizza Day Celebration in NYC
Yesterday’s Bitcoin Pizza Day celebration at New York City bar PubKey brought together leaders from the worlds of technology, culture, and civil society to celebrate Bitcoin's growth since that historic pizza transaction in 2010.
Blockstream and My First Bitcoin have collaborated on wallet distributions in the past, and plan to scale these efforts through additional partnerships with local leaders worldwide.
As Bitcoin continues its journey toward widespread adoption, we are committed to providing the infrastructure and tools needed for a secure, scalable, and decentralized financial future. This Bitcoin Pizza Day donation marks another step toward that vision – empowering individuals everywhere to take control of their financial sovereignty through secure Bitcoin self-custody.
